Books

This artwork is based on the literary forgery, " On Exactitude in Science,” which is written by Jorge Luis Borges. I focus on the different media of reading over time, combine with the poet to emphasize paper is the “golden age” of reading. I created five books; each book has a hole to contain a representative object. The first book that contains clay tablet is called "In the Beginning," the second one that has wooden slips is called “Iteration”, the third one that has an old small book is called "Golden Age," the fourth one has an iPhone model called "Immaterial." The last one has a photo of VR glasses, which is from the internet, is called "Illusion." I hand make the clay tablet as well as the wooden slips. I use the traditional Japanese bookbinding technique and put them in chronological order.

Readers need to flip through the pages and read about a different part of "On Exactitude in Science." Back in ancient times, clay and wood are the media to deliver text messages, but they are inconvenient and inefficient. The invention of paper brings the golden age for reading; the readers can experience different types of paper and feel the paper texture. After the phone is commonly used, more and more physical media turn into digital format. When VR glass becomes popular in the future, readers will read without touching anything. Readers start to lose interaction with the physical objects, and the golden age of reading is fading away.

...In that Empire, the Art of Cartography attained such Perfection that the map of a single Province occupied the entirety of a City, and the map of the Empire, the entirety of a Province. In time, those Unconscionable Maps no longer satisfied, and the Cartographers Guilds stuck a Map of the Empire whose size was that of the Empire, and which coincided point for point with it. The following Generations, who were not so fond of the Study of Cartography as their Forebearers had been, saw that the vast Map was Useless, and not without some Pitilissness was it, that they delivered it up to the Inclemencies of Sun and Winters. In the Deserts of theWest, still today, there are Tattered Ruins of the Map, inhabited by Animals and Beggars; in all the Land there is no other Relic of the Disciplines of Geography.

Suarez Miranda, Viajes de prudentes, Libro IV, Cap.XLV, Lerida,1658 Jorge Borges

I create this poster for Thelonious Monk after listening to his Jazz music. His music is relaxing and dynamic. I choose blue, purple, and orange as the color theme. I paint more than thirty pieces of paper with Acrylic. I use these papers to make seven collages and scan them into the computer. Then I select some parts from the collages and combine them to create this poster.
